Crested Porcupine
This definitive stamp highlights Mauritania’s unique nocturnal fauna by featuring a crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata), locally designated on the issue as a porcupine (porc-épic). The striking multi-color design captures the large rodent with its defensive quills fully raised, foraging along a rocky outcrop under a deep blue desert night sky speckled with sharp, stylized stars. This composition conveys a strong message of evolutionary resilience, survival, and specialized adaptation within Saharan and Sahelian ecosystems. Issued by the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, the stamp underscores the value of the nation's varied environments, showcasing its distinct native wildlife as an essential component of the country's natural identity.
