✨ Discovery of the day
Year: 1937
International Exhibition in Paris 1937 - 90 centime
This stamp was issued for the 1937 Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris, an event centered on the intersection of modern technology and traditional heritage. The illustration features a striking juxtaposition between symbols of 20th-century progress—an airplane, a steamship, and an automobile—and a woman representing the local population presenting a cornucopia of tropical fruits. This composition carries a message of connectivity and modernization, suggesting that Mauritania and the broader West African territories were becoming integrated into global trade and transport networks through French institutional influence. In the Mauritanian context, the imagery highlights the tension between the territory's traditional agricultural and pastoral roots and the introduction of industrial infrastructure, symbolizing a period where the "modern world" began to increasingly touch upon the ancient trans-Saharan routes. It serves as a cultural artifact reflecting how colonial identity was marketed as a blend of natural abundance and technological advancement.
