✨ Discovery of the day
Year: 1962
Foundation of Air Afrique
This commemorative airmail stamp marks the formal establishment of Air Afrique on June 26, 1961, celebrating a key milestone in pan-African aviation partnership. The detailed multi-figure design contrasts a modern African businessman holding a briefcase next to urban construction cranes on the left, with a traditional shepherd holding a staff alongside his sheep near a rural homestead on the right. Overlaid on a silhouette map of the African continent, several commercial jet aircraft are shown in mid-flight. This composition conveys a powerful message of rapid economic modernization, continental integration, and technological advancement, framing the new airline as a bridge between age-old traditions and the industrial, connected future of post-independence Mauritania and its neighboring partner states.
