Great White Egret (Ardea alba)
The Great White Egret (Ardea alba) is a large white heron characterized by its long neck, yellow bill (in most populations), and black legs. It inhabits marshes, wetlands, lagoons, and shallow waters where it feeds mainly on fish, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates. The species is widely distributed across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Australasia. Mauritania lies on important migration routes and includes desert, wetland and coastal habitats that support varied bird life. The species represented in this issue illustrate the biological diversity found across African ecosystems.
