This stamp celebrates Mauritania’s symbolic participation in the 1939 New York World's Fair, an international exhibition dedicated to the theme of "The World of Tomorrow" and global cultural exchange. The intricate engraving juxtaposes the modern New York City skyline with a diverse assembly of figures representing the French colonial empire, including a Moorish woman from Mauritania, traditional Indochinese dancers, and an African man holding a ceremonial mask, carrying a powerful message of pluralism, exoticism, and imperial unity on a global stage. During this pre-war era, Mauritania was a highly isolated and strictly administrative territory within French West Africa. By dedicating an official postage program to this World's Fair, the French administration ("RF") sought to project its colonies into the modern international sphere, using philatellic design to showcase its vast global reach and cultural diversity to a Western audience.
