Crossing the Desert , 1 franc
This stamp captures a fundamental aspect of Mauritanian heritage and the broader history of French West Africa by depicting a nomadic journey across the Sahelian landscape. The illustration serves as a powerful symbol of the historical interdependence between the pastoralist communities and their livestock, specifically highlighting the use of cattle as essential beasts of burden for transport and survival in an arid environment. By showcasing a family or group navigating the expanse with their herd, the imagery celebrates the endurance, resilience, and traditional lifestyle of the Moorish and sub-Saharan cultures that define the region's identity. This scene reflects an economy and social structure deeply rooted in transhumance—the seasonal movement of people and animals—which has remained a cornerstone of Mauritanian cultural life and desert survival for centuries, long before the establishment of modern colonial or national institutions.
