Preserving the Monuments of Nubia - 60 CFA

Issued in 1964, this stamp commemorates the UNESCO International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia, a landmark international effort launched to protect ancient Egyptian and Nubian archaeological sites threatened by the construction of the Aswan High Dam. The campaign united governments, archaeologists, engineers, and cultural organizations from around the world in the preservation and relocation of invaluable monuments that would otherwise have been lost beneath the waters of Lake Nasser.

By issuing this commemorative stamp, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania expressed its support for the preservation of humanity's shared cultural heritage.
